Trade Setup: OWL
Mini Golden Cross. Momentum is improving, but the entry needs discipline.
Setup
Blue Owl Capital triggered a Mini Golden Cross on July 31.
The 20-day SMA crossed above the 50-day SMA. Price is above both averages, volume confirmed the move, and momentum remains strong.
OWL has our attention. At $10.30, we do not want to chase it.
Why It Matters
The short-term trend has turned higher.
OWL is also roughly 46% below its prior high. That leaves room for a larger recovery if the trend continues.
There is a fundamental concern. Q2 fundraising slowed sharply, particularly in Credit and private wealth. Fee-related earnings remained stable, but the slowdown in new capital raises deserves respect.
The chart is improving. The business still has something to prove.
Current Price
$10.30
Technical Structure
| Metric | Reading |
|---|---|
| Price | $10.30 |
| SMA20 | $9.53 |
| SMA50 | $9.52 |
| RSI | 68.9 |
| Volume Confirmation | Yes |
| From 52-Week High | -45.7% |
| Trend | Improving |
| Mini Golden Cross | Confirmed |
Entry
Preferred entry: $10.00 to $10.30 on a controlled hold or pullback.
We would rather see OWL digest the recent move than chase it much higher.
A second entry opportunity could develop on a clean breakout above near-term resistance with volume.
Stop
$9.70
That gives the trade room to move while keeping the stop below the current breakout structure.
A decisive break below this area would tell us the recent momentum is failing.
Targets
| Target | Price |
|---|---|
| Target 1 | $11.25 |
| Target 2 | $12.00 |
At a $10.30 entry with a $9.70 stop, the initial risk is $0.60 per share.
Target 1 offers about 1.6R.
Target 2 offers about 2.8R.
The reward-to-risk is attractive if we can stay near the current price. It becomes less attractive if OWL runs before entry.
Trigger
The Mini Golden Cross has already triggered.
We now want to see OWL hold above $10 and continue building above its rising 20-day and 50-day averages.
A brief consolidation followed by renewed volume would strengthen the setup.
Invalidation
The setup weakens if OWL loses $10 and cannot reclaim it.
A break below $9.70 invalidates the current trade plan.
We would also become more cautious if the 20-day SMA quickly falls back below the 50-day SMA.
Status
TRIGGERED - WATCHING FOR ENTRY
The technical signal is in place.
The question now is whether OWL gives us an entry without forcing us to chase.
Trade Plan
We would consider a starter position near current levels if $10 continues to hold.
We would keep the initial position modest. RSI is already near 70, so this is not the place to become aggressive.
If OWL consolidates, holds support, and then breaks higher with volume, we can consider adding.
If price runs sharply above the current area, we let it go and wait for another setup.
What We’re Watching
We want to see:
- $10 hold as support
- Continued volume confirmation
- The SMA20 continue separating from the SMA50
- RSI cool without a major price breakdown
- Fundraising trends stabilize in coming quarters
The technical picture has improved. The fundamental picture is less clean.
That makes OWL interesting, but not a trade to chase.

Disclosure
We are considering a position in OWL based on this setup. No position is required simply because the Mini Golden Cross has triggered.
